The history Of Xian spans a long, and colorful period in the history of China. After all, for more than a 1000 years, this city ruled as the capital of China. The ancient name for this city was Chang'an.The earliest traces of human habitation, in China, have been traced in this region. Archaeologists have unearthed hundreds of terracotta warriors in this region, their purpose has not exactly been defined but they are famous for their detailed design. These have been located near the tomb of the Chinese emperor Qin Shi Haungdi. The Zhou dynasty actually established Xian as a flourishing economic region, as well as a center where art and literature flourished. The economic history of Xian may be traced from this period. This was way back in the 11th century BC.

The Han dynasty, the Sui dynasty and the Tang dynasties had already started the setting up of this city, as early as 202 BC. It was during the Han dynasty that the actual development of the Silk Road took place. This was largely responsible for the growth of trade and commerce between the secluded region of China, and the Western civilization. In turn, this also led to a cultural interchange between the mysterious Far East, and the West. In the 12th century AD, the Ming dynasty constructed the second wall around the city of Xian. To this day, this remains one of the most preserved remains of such city walls.
The history of Xian witnessed another major change, just before the second world war. The Communist Party of China took control of this city. Since then, Xian has been a flourishing city in the People's Republic of China.
